The Twin Registry Checklist
What to buy two of, what one will do, what to skip. And what to wait on. Use it as a checkbox list while you build your registry.
What to buy TWO of
These are the non-negotiable doubles. Anything sleep-related, restraint-related, or one-per-baby by safety guidance.
- Two car seats· Hospital won't discharge twin newborns without two installed seats. Buy new unless you have full provenance.
- Two cribs· Eventually. Once babies outgrow bassinets at 4–6 months. AAP / NHS: one baby per sleep surface.
- Two crib mattresses (NEW)· Used mattresses linked to elevated SIDS risk. Always new, both.
- Two sets of crib sheets (4–6 total per crib)· Twin laundry hits hard. Have spares.
- Two sleep sacks· Per size, until they outgrow each one.
- Two pacifiers (or skip if not using)· Per type. Silicone vs orthodontic. Buy doubles in case one is lost.
- Two high chairs (after 6 months)· Eventually. Pick what fits your dining setup. Wait until ~6 months to buy.
- Two baby bath tubs (or skip)· Most parents bath twins one-at-a-time, so one tub is fine. If you have help, two tubs at once is faster.
- Two thermometers (one in each diaper bag)· Cheap; convenient to have one stationed in each bag and one at home.
What ONE will do
Most parents are shocked at how short this list is. Twin parents need fewer doubles than the gear industry implies.
- One twin nursing pillow· Twin Z or My Brest Friend Twins. Two single pillows don't replace one twin-shaped pillow.
- One double stroller· Twin or convertible. Side-by-side or tandem depending on doorway / trunk fit.
- One baby monitor system with two cameras· One dual-camera bundle is cheaper and simpler than two unrelated monitors.
- One bottle warmer
- One changing pad in the main room· A second pad in another room is optional. Most twin parents use a portable mat instead.
- One diaper bag (sized for twin volume, ~30L)· Skip premium twin-branded bags at 3× the price.
- One double breast pump (if pumping)· Spectra S1/S2, Medela Symphony rental, Ardo Calypso. Wearables are for one-off, not workhorse use.
- One white noise machine, centered between cribs· Two can over-mask each other's cries.
- One warm dim night light· Avoid color-changing or bright overheads.
- One diaper pail· Twins generate volume but one pail with frequent emptying is fine.
Quantities (across both babies, total)
Twins need quantity, not pair-matching outfits. These are practical totals, not pairs.
- 16–20 onesies (newborn through 3M)
- 10–14 sleepers / footed pajamas (newborn through 3M)
- 10–14 swaddles or sleep sacks combined
- 20–30 burp cloths
- 12–16 receiving blankets
- 8 bottles of one standardized type (Comotomo / Dr. Brown / MAM)
- 2 packs of newborn diapers, 2 packs size 1 (don't over-buy newborn)
- 4–6 fitted crib sheets, total
- 8–10 hooded baby towels
Buy NEW (don't save here)
Three categories where saving creates genuine risk.
- Two crib mattresses
- Two car seats· Used only with full provenance: accident-free, expiration date checked, all parts present.
- Sheets and sleep sacks
- Pacifiers, bottles, nipples (anything that goes in a baby's mouth)
Buy USED (save aggressively)
Items used for 6–12 months and donated. Used markets are full of barely-touched gear.
- Cribs (post-2011 US, post-2013 EU standards)· Verify the model wasn't recalled.
- Glider or feeding chair· One, not two.
- Changing table or dresser
- Storage shelving
- Baby monitor (reset password if wifi)
- Swings
- Jumpers
- Play mats
- Books
What to SKIP entirely
These show up on every registry list and exist mainly to be sold. Cribs should be empty; the room should be functional.
- Crib bumpers· Banned in the US since 2022. Don't buy at any price.
- Crib bedding sets· Cribs should have a fitted sheet only. No blankets, pillows, or comforters for the first year.
- Wipe warmers· Cold wipes are fine. The warmer becomes counter clutter.
- Twin-branded onesies / t-shirts· Almost never worn after the photo.
- Specialized 'diaper genies'· A small lidded trash can with frequent emptying works.
- Premium 'twin' diaper bags at 3× markup· A 30L bag of any brand works.
- Crib mobiles past 5 months· Remove by 5 months per AAP guidance anyway.
- Toy-heavy registry items· Newborns don't need toys; you'll have hand-me-downs by month 3.
- Custom name letter art at birth· Doesn't help the baby sleep. Add later if you want.
WAIT to buy
These get pushed onto registries by default but you don't need them at birth.
- High chairs (need at 6 months)
- Walkers and jumpers (need at 4–6 months; pediatric guidance is mixed)
- Solid-food gear (start at 6 months per AAP)
- Bookshelf and books (use at 6 months)
- Toy storage (need at 9 months)
- Toddler beds (need at 18+ months)
