Twins at 9 Months: Crawling, Gates, and the Playpen Question
Two babies crawling in opposite directions is the nine-month problem. Gates, one big playpen or a fenced room, the next sleep sack size, and the infant seat height check.
Nine months with twins is the month the floor becomes the problem. One crawls, then the other, and they crawl in opposite directions, which is the specific way two babies are harder than one at this age. The gear question shifts from what to buy to what to fence, and the playpen decision that seemed optional at six months becomes the thing that lets you use the bathroom.
What changes at 9 months#
Crawling, pulling to stand, the pincer grip that turns every crumb into a choking hazard, and separation anxiety that makes leaving the room a two-baby protest. With twins the timing rarely matches: one is cruising the coffee table while the other is still commando-crawling, and the mobile one now bothers the stationary one at will. Teeth are usually arriving too, on their own schedules. Anything about motor milestones that worries you goes to the pediatrician; what we can help with is the gear that makes a house survivable with two mobile babies and one adult.
Gear that retires#
- The play gym. Once both babies crawl off it, it's a rug with a toy bar. Fold it and sell it; play gyms resell well because the window is so short.
- Bouncers, for most babies. The practical end is when a baby can sit up and lean out of it. Check the weight limit on yours, and retire both when the first baby starts trying to climb out.
- Infant car seats, for taller twins. Height limits end the seat before weight limits do for many babies. Measure both babies monthly from here; a tall twin can age out before the first birthday and needs a convertible seat now, not at 12 months.
- 6 to 9 month clothes, same as every stage. The bins are labeled by now or they never will be.
- The bottle warmer, quietly. Many nine-month-olds take bottles at room temperature, and two babies who don't care about warm milk saves five minutes per feed.
Gear that arrives#
- Gates: buy as many as you have openings to block, and buy them now. Stairs top and bottom, the kitchen, and one to create a safe room. Hardware-mounted at the top of stairs, pressure-mounted elsewhere. With two crawlers the gate is the difference between watching them and chasing them.
- The playpen: buy one big one. The twin playpen question comes down to three layouts: one large pen for both, two small pens, or fencing off a whole room. We'd fence a room or use one big pen. Two small pens means two babies who can see each other and can't reach each other, which is a recipe for stereo screaming.
- Larger sleep sacks: buy two per baby in the next size. The Kyte Baby Sleep Bag comes in a weight that suits most nurseries; the Halo SleepSack Cotton stays the budget pick. Both babies outgrow the 6 to 12 month size at slightly different times, so buy the bigger baby's next size first.
- Snack catchers: buy four. Two Munchkin Snack Catcher packs is the right count; two babies with the pincer grip and one snack cup is how fights begin.
- A two-camera monitor, if you skipped it at six months. Once they pull to stand in the crib, you'll want to see both.
- Skip: wheeled walkers, a second stationary activity center if you already have one, twin harnesses, and any toy marketed for twins specifically. A cardboard box and a set of measuring cups are the nine-month toy of record.
The playpen question, honestly#
A big playpen for twins looks like a cage and feels like one when you first set it up. Then you use it. The realistic case is not hours of confinement; it's the fifteen minutes when you need both babies safe while you shower, answer the door, or deal with a diaper that has become a bath situation. A single large pen, about 4 by 6 feet, holds two babies and a pile of toys, folds against a wall, and gets used daily until they're walking well. A standard pack-and-play does not fit two nine-month-olds who move. If you go the fence-a-room route instead, the gates above are the whole kit and the room becomes the pen.
What to sell or store now#
This month's batch: the play gym, both bouncers, both jumpers if you bought them, and the 6 to 9 month clothes. If one twin has aged out of the infant car seat, hold the other seat until both have moved to convertibles, then decide. Infant seats carry expiration dates and buyers are rightly cautious, so expect a low resale price or plan to hand them to a retailer trade-in event. Store the bouncers if a third child is possible; they're cheap to keep and annoying to rebuy.
What we'd do#
Gate the stairs this week and fence the living room or buy one large pen. Order the next sleep sack size for the bigger twin before the current one gets tight. Measure both babies against the infant seat height limit and buy convertible seats for whoever is close, not on a birthday schedule. Sell the play gym and bouncers as a set. Then accept that the house looks like a small daycare, because for the next year it is one.

FAQ
- How many baby gates do twins need?
- As many as you have openings to block: top and bottom of stairs, the kitchen, and one to close off a safe room. Hardware-mounted at the top of stairs, pressure-mounted elsewhere. With two crawlers heading in opposite directions, gates are the difference between watching them and chasing them.
- Do twins need one big playpen or two small ones?
- One big one, or fence off a whole room with gates. Two small pens put two babies where they can see each other but not reach each other, which ends in stereo screaming. A single pen around 4 by 6 feet holds both babies and their toys and gets used daily until they walk well.
- When do twins outgrow infant car seats?
- Often by height before weight. Measure both babies monthly from nine months against the seat's height limit. A tall twin can age out before the first birthday and needs a rear-facing convertible seat then, not on a schedule. Check the limits printed on your seat.
