Twins in a Walk-Up Apartment: Stroller, Carrier, and Stairs Plan

Third floor, no elevator, two babies, one of you. The gear that makes a walk-up survivable with twins, and the stroller purchase to skip until you move.

The MyTwins deskLast reviewed September 12, 20264 min readHow we decide

Third-floor walk-up, no elevator, two newborns, and on most weekdays one adult. That constraint decides your gear more than any budget does. The stroller you would buy in a house is the wrong stroller here, and the carrier you thought was optional is the thing you use every single day.

The core problem is simple to state and hard to live: you cannot carry two babies, a stroller, and a bag up three flights in one trip, and you cannot leave one baby anywhere while you make a second trip. Not in the car, not in the lobby, not at the bottom of the stairs. Everything below is built around that rule.

The rule that shapes everything#

Both babies come up together, on your body, in one trip. That means a two-baby carrying setup you can put on in a parking spot or a hallway. Gear stays downstairs or comes up on a separate trip once the babies are safely in a crib or bassinet. If a second adult is around, one takes both babies in carriers or seats and the other hauls the stroller. If not, the stroller does not come up at all.

What to buy#

  • TwinGo Carrier: the solo-parent answer. Both newborns worn at once, one front and one back, then it splits into two carriers when a partner is home. This is the single most walk-up-specific purchase on the list.
  • Two Ergobaby Omni Breeze carriers if you are usually a two-adult household. One baby each, hands free for the keys and the rail. The mesh matters on a stairwell in July.
  • Joovy Twin Roo+: a frame stroller that takes two infant car seats and weighs almost nothing. It lives in the car trunk or chained in the lobby, never upstairs. Cheap enough to buy used without thinking.
  • Two Chicco KeyFit 30 seats, new. They install easily, which you will appreciate doing it in a street spot, and they click onto the Joovy frame. They also stay in the car. Carrying two infant seats up three flights is a wrist injury waiting to happen.
  • BabyJogger City Tour 2 Double for month six onward: the compact-fold side-by-side that actually fits in a coat closet if you ever do bring it up. Until the babies sit up, skip it.
  • A Yogasleep Hushh clipped to the carrier. Stairwells echo, neighbors slam doors, and two babies waking in a hallway is a bad place to be.

What to skip or delay#

  • Any stroller over about 25 pounds. The BabyJogger City Mini GT2 Double and the UPPAbaby Vista V2 with a second seat are excellent strollers for houses. In a walk-up they become the reason you stop going outside.
  • A second stroller for upstairs. Nobody uses it. Buy one that lives at street level and treat it like a bike.
  • Two bouncers, two swings, two of anything that needs assembly. Everything that comes up your stairs is carried by you, so favor gear that folds flat. An Ikea Sniglar crib arrives in a box you can carry alone. Most others do not.
  • A big diaper bag. A 30-liter backpack you can wear with a carrier on is the limit. Two shoulder bags and two babies is one bag too many.

The stroller storage question#

Ask the building, in writing, whether a stroller can live in the lobby, under the stairs, or in a bike room. If yes, buy a cable lock and a rain cover and the walk-up stroller problem is mostly solved. If no, the frame stroller lives in the car and you become a carrier household for the first six months, which in our experience is not the hardship it sounds like. Newborn twins are light. It is the stroller that is heavy.

If you have no car and no lobby storage, the honest answer is the TwinGo plus a folding stroller you are willing to carry up in one hand while wearing both babies. The City Tour 2 Double is the lightest one we would trust for that, and even it is a workout. Plan the big outings for days when two adults are home.

Everything else comes up the stairs too#

The walk-up tax is not only the stroller. It is diapers, formula, laundry, groceries. Twins go through supplies at a rate that turns each of those into a stair carry every couple of days. Set up diaper and formula subscriptions before the babies arrive so boxes appear at the door. Get groceries delivered for the first three months and do not feel a thing about it. If the laundry is in the basement, buy enough onesies and burp cloths to run a two-day cycle instead of a daily one. Every avoided trip is a nap you might get.

Ask for help in the specific form of stairs. Friends who offer to come by can carry the stroller up, bring the diaper box in, take the trash down. That is more useful than holding a baby, and easier to say yes to. Keep a small bag of stair-day essentials (two diapers, wipes, a spare onesie, a pacifier) clipped to the carrier so a forgotten item never means another trip down and up.

What we'd do#

Buy the TwinGo, two KeyFit 30s, and a used Joovy Twin Roo+ that never leaves the trunk or the lobby. Add the City Tour 2 Double around six months if the building lets it live downstairs. Set up every delivery you can and treat the first three months as a carrier season. Then, when the lease is up, the walk-up stops being a factor and you can buy the stroller you actually wanted, used, from someone who lived in a house.

FAQ

How do you get twins up the stairs alone?
Both babies come up on your body in one trip, in a twin carrier like the TwinGo or a carrier plus a wrap. Never leave one baby in the car, the lobby, or at the bottom of the stairs while you fetch the other. The stroller and the bag come up on a separate trip once both babies are in a crib or bassinet, or they stay downstairs.
What is the best twin stroller for a walk-up apartment?
One that never comes upstairs. A Joovy Twin Roo+ frame with two infant car seats lives in the trunk or chained in the lobby for the first six months. After that, the BabyJogger City Tour 2 Double is the lightest compact-fold double we would carry up in one hand. Skip anything over about 25 pounds.
Should infant car seats come up the stairs with twins?
No. Two infant seats up three flights, daily, is a wrist and back problem you do not need. Leave the seats installed in the car and move the babies into carriers at the curb. If you have no car, a lightweight carrier setup and a folding stroller that lives near the door is the workable version.
